This post is for families who would like to own more books at home for their preschoolers to enjoy looking at and that they may enjoy reading to their children.

The Addison County Readers, Inc., sponsors Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Children whose are registered for this program receive an engaging book from the Imagination Library in the mail each month.

Any preschooler (birth to five years of age) living in Addison County can participate! There is no cost to the family, no strings attached, and the books are the child’s to keep.

Even if your family has more than one child under five years old, each child may be enrolled and receive a different, age-appropriate book every month. For more information about the program or to enroll online, go to www.addisoncountyreaders.org.

MARY HOGAN ELEMENTARY School principals Tom Buzzell and Steve Lindemann didn’t have to eat their words last week, but they did have to eat bugs after the Middlebury school’s students met the principals’ challenge by reading 562,653 minutes during a month-long read-a-thon. The students erupted with screams and laughter with each crunchy bite. Students pictured are: Jolee Heffernan, Amelia Coburn, Kylie Bean, Dylan Field, Julian Cotell and Aislynne McGill.

From: Jennifer McCarty and Katie Wilkins, MESA Co-Chairwomen

First, a HUGE thank you to Julie Altemose and  Liz Gander. Liz created all the classroom files we use to log the minutes. She helped us each week to make sure the files were set for the latest update.  In addition to being a great Librarian, Julie Altemose spent time reviewing Sponsor sheets and Reading Logs with the students before the Read-a-thon got rolling. She was also was very generous in allowing us to take up residence in the library for a couple hours each Tuesday morning to do Reading Log counting.

D. Tidd collected the logs from the classrooms each week. Without our logs we’d have nothing to count!

Our Volunteer Counters:

Tammi Swan prepared our file setup for counting and got the data together for the bulletin board. Her consistent presence and support was so helpful!

Many of our counter volunteers come back each year to help us and we greatly appreciate it!

Renee Ursitti did such a great job on the bulletin board from concept to execution. She was also our fine server of bugs at the Cricket Cafe for the Principals’ Challenge!

Of course, we must thank all MHS teachers who help make the Read-a-thon a success by promoting participation in their classes.

Thank you to “Bonnie’s Book Foundation” via Amy Graham for their contribution of new books to our students during the book cart donation.

To Ellie Friml, Box Office Manager and Jackson Gallery Director at Town Hall Theater, for her several hours working on our events poster. Through several iterations, Ellie prepared our poster for printing. Many, many thanks to her for doing this during a very busy production week at THT.

To Chuck Miller, who worked with the students to write lyrics and record the song used for the video. Of course, he is also the band director, so he leads the band when playing at both our opening and closing assemblies!

To Kurt Broderson of MCTV, who worked with students to write the lyrics and produced the video for the song. Kurt was also behind the camera recording our opening assembly, the Jeff Kinney visit, the instructional video on the digital bookmark and of course the Principals’ Challenge at the “Cricket Cafe.”

To Elizabeth Gaucher of Longridge Editors LLC for curating our blog for the second year in a row!

To Tricia Weeks Allen, Angela Cobrin Landis, and Jenn Staats, who kept showing up over and over again with fresh ideas and new resources to make the Read-a-thon Committee successful.

To April Rule and Sue Kallen, who were always at the ready in the front office to make things happen.

To Tom Buzzell and Steve Lindemann, who were always at the ready EVERYWHERE to make things happen!

To META via Jeff Lester, the semi-covert ultra-elite secret society of . . . oh, heck. The teachers and educators who gave money, time, and support to everything we did!

And last but oh so not at all least, to Mary Longey, who was helped MESA in so many ways during the Read-a-thon that it is too much to list! We appreciate you, Mary!

Eating……Some Really NASTY……Bugs. For the Cause!

Mr. Buzzell and Mr. Lindemann.

There are none higher.

Behold, the 2014 Principals’ Challenge! If you ever thought you were tough, this might be cause for reevaluation . . .

More Book Fair Good News!

celebration-pictures_2983_1

MESA Co-Chairwoman Katie Wilkins (who rumor has it was the heart and soul of the 2014 Book Fair but she won’t say that) sends this detailed follow up on volunteers and money raised. Thanks, Katie!

“We had a really spectacular Book Fair this year. Below I’ve listed a few highlights and names of those who helped make it happen.”

  • Jennifer McCarty (MESA Co-Chairwoman) worked every evening and helped with counting money, documenting funds, and helping customers/parents/kids/teachers with their purchases. She assisted in setting up the Book Fair as well.
  • Jenn Staats worked at the book fair daily and together with Tricia Allen ran a very successful book cart donation. they provided ‘bundles’ of books to many children and boxes of books to our Early Ed. youngsters.
  • Holly Staats and her fifth grade classmates provided artistic talent by creating many of our book donation posters.
  • Julie Altemose assisted in presenting children with additional library time to visit the Book Fair and Liz Gander assisted in providing materials and supervision. They were both such gracious hosts and reworked so many things to allow us access to that space.
  • Amy Roberts helped ‘show me the ropes’ and provided helpful behind-the-scenes guidance and assisted in setting up the Book Fair.
  •  Gretchen Cotell, Lindsay Wilson, Sara Cassidy and Amy Graham worked day shifts assisting customers. Hope Cinquegrana assisted with both the set-up and take-down of the Book Fair. Kerri Duquette-Hoffman, D. Tidd, Ian Ross and Teresa Aranguiz assisted with taking the Book Fair down.
  • Chris Pratt and the entire Maintenance Division helped in so many ways. Storing the fair, wheeling all of the boxes around, cleaning around us, and opening doors. They were wonderful.

Statistics

  • Our total raised was  $5,714.44.
  •  $2,857.22 in Scholastic dollars was profited and redeemed to provide 6 previously personally selected books for every teacher, including all special programs like Speech, Reading Recovery and Art. With the remaining balance of over 1,000 Scholastic Dollars the Mary Hogan library will be able to buy books for all children to access!

Other Cool Things

  • Many parents bought books for classrooms via teacher wishlist stacks.
  • An anonymous donor provided many vouchers for children in need. If a child needed help purchasing a book, he or she received that help.
  • WCAX used us as a backdrop for their Newscast featuring Julie Altemose!

AN HUGE THANK YOU TO MESA, PARENTS, DONORS, AND ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS WHO HELPED MAKE THIS MUCH-LOVED EVENT COME TOGETHER FOR OUR STUDENTS!

We Love Little Pressroom

LPR_logo__2012-1

For twenty-eight years, the Little Pressroom has been Addison County’s trusted source for quality printed & promotional products for businesses, groups and individuals. We pride ourselves in providing exceptional customer service, prompt turn around, competitive rates and free estimates.

“It’s very kind of you to want to include us, but I don’t believe we really do so much as to be included with sponsors. We just offer some breaks here and there as we’re able.”

These are the words of Ted Shambo, the owner of Little Pressroom in Middlebury. But Ted is the only person around who thinks he doesn’t do much! In our town, Ted is well-known for his generosity and ongoing support for the human needs of the community.

Ted and Little Pressroom are a wonderful example of how little things matter and add up to big things.

At the Mary Hogan School Read-a-thon, we are are enormously thankful for this local business support. We try to run a tight administrative budget, and every little bit of help we get keeping those numbers low makes us smile.

This is for you, Ted!
